Why did you join Deallus?
I had spent the majority of my working life in “Big Pharma” and was frustrated with the opportunity I had to influence change. In these large companies it is often difficult to access the true decision makers and direct change. I found some of the companies I worked for were confined by red-tape and bureaucracy, in others individuals who were gatekeepers to decisions were just reluctant to change.
Deallus offered me the chance to change – change the definition of my career by taking me out of my comfort zone and change my level of influence, both within the company for which I work and for my clients.
What is your favorite thing about working at Deallus?
The opportunities I’ve been given. I have been given far more responsibility in my 2 years at Deallus than in my previous roles. I manage a team of 4 Associates with responsibility to mentor and develop people. I have been involved in the recruitment process for a significant number of people with whom I now work. I have the opportunity to develop and deliver training of new joiners. I also have the responsibility of managing accounts, clients and projects and delivering this to a high standard. All of this within an exciting, supportive, collaborative environment with great colleagues.
What is your most memorable client experience at Deallus?
Having the opportunity to lead facilitate a recent client workshop was challenging and hugely rewarding. The client was a $150bn pharma major who had made a multi-billion dollar acquisition of an asset about to go into market. From the client-side, there were 30 attendees from global HQ and affiliates, including two VPs and the entire global marketing team and it was the one opportunity the client had to “get it right”. The workshop and the Deallus team received terrific feedback from the client, and from a personal point of view the successful execution of the workshop was not only my most memorable client experience at Deallus but probably the proudest professional achievement in my whole career.
What advice would you have for someone looking to join Deallus?
Be honest with yourself. Deallus is made up of incredibly bright, energetic individuals who will strive to go the extra mile for clients and colleagues. A high performing culture brings with it demands. Be honest that you will strive to meet the challenges and demands, that you will support your colleagues and that you will give it your very best shot. You have to be comfortable with what you can offer. There won’t be someone there holding your hand, you are expected to be a self-starter, motivated and capable. Some people thrive on this responsibility but it is not for everyone.
Tell us a little bit about yourself outside of work.
I’m originally from the north of England, but moved to the south of the country around 18 years ago. I have been with my partner for 25 years (yes really!) and have 2 children, Alex and Nathan. These 2 take up most of my time outside of work, but I still manage to play football and tennis for local clubs. I’m an avid follower of sport and a die-hard football fan and Bolton Wanderers supporter.
